I don't normally share my Sharing Time Ideas but after much thought and preparation I thought this might be one that someone else may be interested in. The idea for it began as I watched the Luge one evening. The commentators recapped the horrible story of the Olympian who was killed on a practice run of the Luge. I couldn't help but compare the Luge to our lives...
So I decided to do an Olympic Sharing Time. I made the 5 Olympic rings out of construction paper and used the inside of the ring to write 5 corresponding events. Our 5 events were Bobsled, Speed Skating, Pairs Figure Skating, Hockey, and of course, Luge. Here's what we did for each event.
Bobsled: For the Jr Primary I took 4 familiar Bible stories (Noah, David & Goliath, Daniel in the Den of Lions, and Jonah) and told them in 4 parts. (i.e. This prophet told the people to repent. The Lord told this prophet to build a large ship. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Because this prophet and his family had obeyed, they were saved.) I typed and cut up the parts of the story. I wrote "Noah, David, Daniel, and Jonah" on the chalkboard and then picked a piece of each story from an envelope. The first bobsled that was filled was the winner. Noah won!
In Senior Primary I assigned each class a block of scriptures. I told each class to read through the scriptures and be able to tell the story in 4 short statements. I also wanted them to include how their scripture story had anything to do with The Atonement of Jesus Christ. They worked so hard and did a great job. The 3 stories I had them retell were Alma the Younger, Enos, and Saul/Paul. These scripture stories were suggested in the Sharing Time Manual.
Speed Skating: For this event we did a scripture chase. I just chose a bunch of scriptures from the Topical Guide under Jesus Christ--the Atonement. We didn't actually get to this event in Junior Primary because of time but the plan was to have the scripture chase be between the teachers. In Senior Primary, I had one representative from each class. They did better than I expected.
Pairs Figure Skating: Our Primary has been learning sign language to the new song, "I Know My Savior Loves Me." For our Pairs Figure Skating, I had 2 from each class come to the front and I quizzed them on their sign language. The sign language really touches my heart each time the kids sing that song. I'd recommend it to anyone interested. It adds another dimension to the sweet words of the song.
Hockey: Last week, the 1st Counselor in Primary helped the kids learn the 3rd Article of Faith. I tested their memories in the Hockey round. I had them start at the back of the Primary room. I would start saying an Article of Faith (I only did the 3rd in Junior but mixed it up in Senior). When I stopped, they had to fill in the blank. If they got it right, they took a step forward. If they messed up, that is where they would "shoot" the hockey puck from. I made a simple hockey puck out of a ribbon spool, covered in tissue paper. They used a golf club instead of a hockey club and tried to hit the lid of a box I had set up at the other end of the room. This event was popular!
Luge: So back to the Luge. Instead of an event for this final sport, I told them a parable of the Luge I had thought about. I compared the Luge to our lives, it's not always easy, there may be turns and speeds we weren't expecting, etc. But our Savior made it possible that if we fell off the luge, made a wrong turn, or needed a "do-over" we could start over. He provides us the safety net and He knew it would be difficult. I closed with my testimony of the Atonement.
I also made each Primary child and teacher a gold medal out of a chocolate coin and some red ribbon.
I don't often share things like this but hope someone else may find it useful.

Random
Not much has been going on lately so I haven't had anything to post. We are all getting cabin fever and wish that darn groundhog would've predicted Spring because we're ready for it! Here are a few random pics from our house.
Gavin has been working on the sign from Star Trek...don't ask me why, it's not like we are Trekkies or anything. He just thought it looked cool when he did it with his hand. He insisted that I take this picture because he wants his friend Brandon in Idaho Falls to see it. He is such a funny kid.
Cameron recently spent the remaining money that he made selling pop with Abbie at the EISF. He's been holding on to the last little bit, wanting to spend it on just the right thing. He finally decided to buy a skateboard (at Walmart, it was only $9!) He asked his dad to show him how to ride it. Spencer tried to do a sweet move and ended up hurting his hand when he fell. It was humorous. I only wish I had been taking a video instead of a picture. Cameron is anxious for the sun to start shining so he can spend more time outside.

He's a Cub Scout
Cameron is the newest Cub Scout of Pack #4201. Tonight was his first Pack Meeting. We worked really hard to earn his Bobcat award. Then they had a Jell-o Eating Contest. Cam did not win but had a ton or fun. Here's a little video of the evening.

Callie's Birthday & Graduation
Callie turned 28 on the 25th of January. She told me that she just wanted to go to dinner with her sisters & their families. However, I took it upon myself to invite some of our Baldwin cousins who are close to her age and live in Utah without letting Callie in on our little surprise. We all met at The Training Table. When we got there, just cousin Hugh had arrived. I said, "Maybe we should sit next to this lonely man." At first, Callie didn't realize it was Hugh and couldn't believe I'd want to sit next to some random guy. When she figured it out though she was super surprised! In the end, there were 16 of us...Callie, Spencer, Me, Cameron, Gavin, Owen, Emily, Jeff, Hugh, Candace, Carlos, Natalie, Jamison, Amber, Spence, and Mia. It was so fun to see our cousins. We visited until the Training Table closed. We laughed a lot and cannot wait to get together again.
On the 27th of January, Callie graduated from Cosmetology School. She completed her 2000 hours, took and passed both tests, and is now looking for a good job. She worked really hard for the last 13 months...going to school in the evenings, working a full-time job in the daytime. They had a small graduation in her honor but since it was a Wednesday night, she didn't want us to make a very big deal about it. She just said that if Emily & I could go, that'd be great. However, Mom & Dad wanted to be part of the celebration so, once again, without Callie's knowledge, they drove to Utah. She was so so so surprised to see them.
Here she is with her instructors, friends, and the flowers mom & dad brought her.
We're so proud of you Cals!

Christmas 2009
After getting home from Uncle Ryan & Aunt No'el's house the boys put on their new Granny Jammies and left cookies and a note for Santa.
And Santa came! He brought Owen a blue light saber, Gavin a Nintendo 64 and some games, and Cameron a BB Gun! The boys were so excited. We spent the rest of the weekend playing with the new loot and Cam practiced shooting his new gun. It was fun to share Christmas with Granny & Grandpa, Aunt Callie, and Aunt Emily & Uncle Jeff.

Christmas Eve
We had a hard time decided where to spend the holidays this year. We debated back and forth between staying at our house or going to Idaho. Idaho won (due to the special gift Cameron had asked Santa for (a BB gun). I just wanted him to be able to use it and didn't think that would be feasible in our back yard.) So after having dinner with the Styer Grandparents & opening their gifts on the 23rd, we loaded the car (and I mean LOADED) and left Thursday morning, Christmas Eve. Cam left a note for Santa on the new white board/chalk board easel from G & G Styer.
We arrived in Blackfoot around 1. Emily & Jeff were already there, Callie was on her way. We went to Ryan's for dinner...numerous appetizers and soup in bread bowls. (Notice No'el's awesome Christmas sweater. She got it as a white elephant gift, can you believe anyone would give that lovely thing away?)
Shortly after dinner, Jette was getting cranky and ready to go to bed. Granny carried on the tradition of opening one gift before bed (always pajamas) so Jette got hers first. She wasn't very excited this year because she was so sleepy but she looked pretty darn cute, don't you agree?
We all went down to enjoy Ryan & No'el's newly finished basement while we had our Nativity program. Here are our shepherds & Joseph:
Our lone angel:
The entire cast:
The only problem was that no one had brought a script so Ryan ad-libbed and the kids sang a few special songs. Our boys sang with a special choir number at church, "In the Stable" so they sang their verse. Abbie sang "Picture a Christmas". And they all sang Mary & Joseph.
Then things started getting a little silly. The kids sang "Jingle Bells," the sisters sang "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas,"
Ryan & Gavin did a little break dancing and "The Worm", and on and on...There was A LOT of laughing and great memories were made.
