Martin's Cove & Independence Rock

We went to Martin's Cove yesterday. It was a bit of a drive so I was kind of hesitant to force the kids back in the car. But I'm so glad we did. It truly makes you appreciate the pioneers, their sacrifice, and it makes their trek a little more real to the kids. We ate a picnic on the lawn and then walked along the trail for a while. We especially enjoyed seeing the bridge that Nate helped build with Kami's dad. We definitely miss Nate.

After we left Martin's Cove, we drove a short distance to see Independence Rock. This historical site was a landmark for the pioneers. If they got to the Rock before the 4th of July, they had a better chance of good weather on the last part of their trek to Salt Lake City. Many pioneers climbed the rock and carved their names into it. Spencer and Kami climbed it. I stayed on solid ground with the kids.
